Since the COVID-19 cases were reported and a total lockdown was announced reports and data that was collected showed that all types of violence against women and girls have increased and we need to stop it. Everyone has a role to play so that this violence can end. Media helps in increasing awareness about GBV and crimes which have intensively increased during the pandemic. Collaborative approach that combines sensitive reporting together with advocacy, sensitization and support for media personnel would contribute to curb the violence.
Social media platforms like twitter have tried to campaign on issues involved in gender-based violence like the# MeToo campaign, #GenderbasedViolence

Gender based violence and sexual harassment should come to and end

THE TRUE DEATH TOLL OF COVID-19

COVID-19 deaths are a key indicator to track the evolution of the pandemic. On 30th January 2020 COVID-19 was declared a public emergency of international concern with an official death toll of 171.By 31st December 2020, this figure stood at 1,813,188. The estimates suggest the total number of global deaths attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 is at least 3 million, representing 1.2 million more deaths than officially reported. Since 29th June 2020, the mortality rate was highest among those aged over 80 years.

Look at cumulative deaths from COVID -19 by world region reveals several striking facts that might go against people’s impression of the state of the pandemic. Corona virus deaths have been rising consistently throughout 2021 and death counts have not been recently slowed down. The death toll accelerated towards the end of 2020 and has kept up its trajectory.

Before COVID the mortality rate was very low in the world compared to the recent statistics.

Different social media platforms shared the mortality rate on twitter while content creators shared some videos on you tube about the rate at which people are losing their lives. The Ministry of Health in Kenya who’s cabinet secretary is Mutahi Kagwe announced everyday the people infected, those who have died and those I quarantine every day in the Television. This was done so that citizens can be aware of the virus and be more cautious

To significantly reduce the number of deaths and the number of people affected and substantially decrease the direct economic losses relative to global gross domestic products caused by disasters, including water related disasters with a focus on protecting the poor and the people in vulnerable situations.

WORLD’S CULTURAL AND NATURAL HERITAGE

Natural heritage is always the resources such as land, water, animals and plants. Cultural heritage are resources which include buildings, art, traditions and cultural practice

We are in the midst of an unprecedented global crisis affecting our lives, our livelihoods, and social and cultural activities, COVID-19 is impacting our movable, immovable and intangible cultural heritage and it will continue to do so if the virus will not come to an end. Before COVID everything was going on well. Communities all over the world were carrying out their activities like circumcision, weddings ceremonies among others very well without any restrictions.

Tourism sector came to a standstill because most countries closed their airlines and there was a total locked down in some countries too. This affected tourism sector since there were no tourist traveling in and out of different countries in the world.

New media in this case has promoted worlds cultural heritage and natural heritage whereby people on various social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and also content creators on YouTube share videos and photos of the places they have visited hence making others to be more interested on such places and hence visiting the place.

Other communities also share their cultural activities on YouTube hence making other communities understand how other communities do their activities on several occasions. Like marriages and even circumcision ceremonies.

The famous Mwaniki Wamgeria who is a tv personality with shows like Get in The Kitchen and Foods of Kenya has promoted culture through Tv station to show how different communities cook their foods. You can watch the video through this shared link.

The government also should set some amount of money aside so as to protect and preserve all the cultural and natural heritage so as to fund them incase of any crisis.

HOW COVID_19 AFFECTED HOUSING IN KENYA.

COVID-19 has affected both tenants and the owners of houses in general. Back then before the pandemic people were able to pay their rent on time without necessarily being locked out of their houses. This is simply because people could go out there and conduct several businesses that could give them money to pay their bills. When COVID-19 cases were reported tables turned and people were not allowed by the Government to run several business. This forced people to stay at home jobless, while some lost their jobs due to closure of some business. This was to avoid the spread of the virus across the country hence they couldn’t generate any income.
It became a major challenge to most people living in various parts of our country, people were not able to pay their rent. Different social media platforms were used by most citizens explaining how life has been hard on their side hence they aren’t able to pay money to their landlords.

The above story that KTN one of our tv station featured was about this boda-boda guy who was unable to pay his rent and was to move out with his family. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LNVpHkmMvE

A lady by the name Christine Karimi on the other hand helped the tenants who lived in her apartments not to pay rent until the COVID-19 was over. You can watch the video on YouTube on this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2H7mDV3I2OA

To government by 2030 should therefore ensure access for all to adequate ,safe and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade also slums. This affordable housing will help citizens to be able to pay rent incase of any pandemic

EFFECTS OF HEAVY RAINS IN MOI

We all agree that rains are good and also it has some impacts to the society. Here in Moi University during rainy seasons the roads are a major problem .They reason behind this is that the roads around the school are not in a good condition they are not even tarmacked it is just a hell of a place to live in .Student who reside outside the school struggle so much to get to school on time due to the muddy road .The reason that makes this students to reside outside the school is that the hostels are not conditions and thus they decide to reside outside the school. Some even end up missing classes when its rainy because the roads are impassable.
It is not even the students alone but also the business women and the lectures are affected by these roads. The lectures end up even missing to attend classes since they are slowed down by the muddy road .The muddy road affect everyone who lives around the school environs. Some people blame the school administration from not having all weather roads around the school to prevent such cases. Now who is to be blamed? Is it the school administration or the county government of Uasin Gishu were the school is located? It is a matter of concern and it should be solved as soon as possible.

MOI UNIVERSITY STUDENTS STRIKE.

It was on Friday morning on 11th October, when Moi University students went for a strike which was stated earlier by the student’s leaders as a peaceful demonstration which later on became a serious strike. The students were to have a kamukunji at the students centre and give out their grievances to the student’s leader so that they can be forwarded to the school administration and later on be solved.
The issues that the students had include the increment if school fees, supplementary exams fee among others. All was in vain when the G.S.U was called upon to prevent l the students from their peaceful strike. The G.S.U. were forced to use teargas so as to chase away the striking students .Later on the strike became serious which made the school administration to close the school by 12.00 pm noon.
After a senate meeting held by the school administration it was decided that the 1st and 4th year students to resume back to school after two weeks and pay a resumption fee of 1,950 and the rest of the students were to report on January with the same amount of fine.
This wasn’t even fair that the students had to pay the fines yet there were no damages made by the students .They just had to pay the money since we had no option and the issues were not even solved.

THE GLAMOUR SALON AND BARBERSHOP

The Glamour Salon and Barber shop is located in Moi University main campus Kesses, at a place commonly known as ‘stage’ near Mwangaza Hotel. It was started by a current third year student. It was a small business when it was started yet it has grown to a big salon and barber shop within the campus.
The owner of this salon has been able to employ other students to work there so that they can be able to get money for their upkeep. This small business has motivated or encouraged other students within the campus to also think about other business ideas so that they can get money to do their things without necessarily asking their parents for money.
They offer a lot of services within the salon. They have about 5-10 people working together so as to provide faster services to their customers. They also offer other services that the client did not actually ask for. By doing this they encourage more customers to their salon. They operate from 8.00 AM to 10.00 PM.
SERVICES OFFERED BY THE SALON.
The services offered by the salon include;
Braiding @800 Ksh
Weaving @600Ksh
