It was on Friday morning on 11th October, when Moi University students went for a strike which was stated earlier by the student’s leaders as a peaceful demonstration which later on became a serious strike. The students were to have a kamukunji at the students centre and give out their grievances to the student’s leader so that they can be forwarded to the school administration and later on be solved.
The issues that the students had include the increment if school fees, supplementary exams fee among others. All was in vain when the G.S.U was called upon to prevent l the students from their peaceful strike. The G.S.U. were forced to use teargas so as to chase away the striking students .Later on the strike became serious which made the school administration to close the school by 12.00 pm noon.
After a senate meeting held by the school administration it was decided that the 1st and 4th year students to resume back to school after two weeks and pay a resumption fee of 1,950 and the rest of the students were to report on January with the same amount of fine.
This wasn’t even fair that the students had to pay the fines yet there were no damages made by the students .They just had to pay the money since we had no option and the issues were not even solved.
Strikes will never bring an impact however much you’re fighting for your rights.
