Historical background
This school was established in 1988 to meet the growing need for information related manpower in Kenya and across the country. The current Dean of School is Prof.Justus Wamukoya Students aspiring to pursue degree programmes such as Records Management and archives management, Publishing and Mass media and Information Technology are able to enrol themselves in this particular school. The school has and continues to attract more students and other scholars. The school has created a niche in research.
Objective of the programme.
The objectives of the courses offered are to;
Introduce students to current thought and practice in information management.
1. Provide basic professional education and training in a broad range of information disciplines so as to develop persons who are capable of operating in various fields.
2. Provide students with the principles of management of information systems and services.
3.Equip students with necessary knowledge and skills to respond intelligently to problems of information collection, processing, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information.
Learning outcomes of the programmes.
On successful completion of the course the student should be able to;
1. Maintain efficiency and ethics in the management and provision of information services.
2. Manage records, archives and their related services.
3. Execute all work activities related to both print and electronic media.
4. Demonstrate confidence and skill in application and management of information technology and systems.
Design of the programme.
In first year students are introduced to information sciences and also taking other common courses in other schools. In third year and second year all students study a common core course in information communication technology among others .Then in their final year they specialize in the following areas;
1. Information technology
2. Records management
3. Library and information sciences
4. Publishing and Media studies.
